In order to appreciate Montenegrin artistic culture, we cannot pay attention only to a few famous monuments, but we should take into account all the art of this region and the circumstances in which they were created and later discovered, so that we can properly appreciate the story of this place. When we talk about the art of this small area/region, it is also important to consider the allegorical documentation favored by the ancient Greeks.

Montenegro is a small country, but the place has "old bones" and is one of the oldest regions known to the earliest civilizations. If you think about its history, it is very difficult to define the geographical position of Montenegro in different historical periods because this small area has been of interest to many imperialist powers for centuries. Between many wars, Montenegro was hit by natural disasters. As in neighboring Greece, earthquakes over time destroyed many important buildings of historical importance, but many of them remained preserved and important to mention.  For example, the site of Maliki Rosa, which dates from the 6th to the 10th century and represents the beginning of Christianity. From the church of St. Thomas in the village of Kuti to the church in the village of Sušćepan, stone decorative lampshades from the 9th to the 11th century and a stone altar - parapet have been preserved.

Most of the Montenegrin territory is made of limestone formations, but also rich in white marble, especially the area near the old Duklja. Another Roman fortress-city was discovered here, which shows the dedication and artistic spirit of the people who once lived there. Also, Montenegrin marble is not fine and compact and it was very difficult to process it because of its hardness, much more difficult than with Pentelic or Carrera marble which are much softer and more affordable materials.

For centuries, Montenegro was considered as a place that lacks ores and riches, inaccessible to travelers, with very steep terrains and very wild and untouched nature. Its simplicity dates back to ancient times, and has been preserved for generations and centuries. This is evidenced by the pure forms of several works (which people living in the northern regions still use) such as e.g. antique clocks with a handle and a tall cylindrical neck made of baked clay, decorated with ribbons, which are exhibited in the museum. It reminded me of my grandmother's sideboard full of very old pottery. However, this specific piece of art found in the museum dates back to the period 2100-1900 BC.

Two bowls, which were discovered in the region, have small pieces of metal, which introduce us to the next period - the early phase of ancient times. Objects such as a small metal sharp harpoon and a broken spear were seen on the dusty shelves of this small museum, and above them was a small faded inscription in Cyrillic. The alphabet itself is old, although the Latin alphabet is commonly used in this region, many schools teach Cyrillic as a second alphabet to encourage new generations to stay true to their ancestral roots.  In Montenegro, the Neolithic Age, with all its three phases such as the low, middle and high phase, is represented by ceramic artefacts used for everyday life. However, there are many more remains of the Eneolithic culture than the Neolithic, and this makes the assessment of style and artistic trend even more difficult. Connoisseurs believe that the decoration on Eneolic vessels consists of some kind of prehistoric sign system that serves to identify a certain race, each possessing their own particular group of symbols. On the other hand, some believe that these decorations form part of a figurative and aesthetic language. One of the most important facts is that despite the small size of our country, we cannot fail to mention the enormous diversity of folklore traditions.

Ethnological study of dance, knitting, decorative art, costume, jewelry, engraving, paint on clay bowl designs, as well as local folklore art of almost every place, explains the great wave of migration from the northern coast of the Black Sea (Indian-European migration) that had a huge impact on this area. Although scientific evidence of many migrations is evident, scientists are unable to identify a single Eneolithic race in Montenegro. Based on various facts and evidence found in the region, there were several races. This is the reason why historians still call Montenegro the Eneolithic people because of the generic name "Indo-European". With that in mind, we can refer to the following works of art that bear witness to the first traces of human community dwellings: One of these dwellings was discovered in the Vranjaj cave, on the slopes of Radostak near Herceg-Novi. They come from the Neolithic period (5000-4000 BC). More intensive settlement was in the Eneolithic (2000 – 1700BC) and also during the Bronze Age. A cup with a stand from the Bronze Age with ornaments from the Vranjaj cave. During the Bronze and Metal Ages, burials under earthen mounds were intensive. Mirko Komnenović's house was turned into the National Museum of Herceg Novi in ​​1953. It is a beautiful structure designed in the late Baroque style, and was built in the late 18th century. The pseudo-baroque expansion and added parts changed the original appearance of the museum, making it grandiose.

Engraved names with bayonets of Russian soldiers, from 1807 during the war with Napoleon, decorate the authentic doors on the ground floor. Later, this object acquired the official title of regional museum of Herceg-Novi. Partial restoration of the museum took place in 1979, 1994, 1996 and 2001. In front of this regional museum, there is a beautiful Mediterranean and subtropical botanical garden, with more than a hundred selected plants, which decorate the 1000 square meter park. Many very exotic and extravagant unique plants found their place here in this beautiful garden. Many species of palms, agave, cactus, aloe and many other plants grow here with very unusual shapes and colors. During the blooming season, flowers ennoble the space. Here, we can find different varieties of creepers but also Pitosporums, also coastal conifers, Mimosa trees, Camellias, Magnolias and aromatic and medicinal Mediterranean plants. Mirko Komnenović was an active participant in the Balkan War, working with the intelligence service against the Austro-Hungarians. He was also a prisoner on the island of Mamula during the First World War. He was elected as the ambassador of Boka Kotorska in the National Parliament of the Monarchy of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1923 and 1925. He was also the president of the municipality of Herceg-Novi in ​​1930. He became the Minister of Social Policy and National Health in 1935. He was awarded many medals. These are some of the many: White eagle with sword, St. Sava order of the first and third degree, Russian medal: St. Vladimir of the 4th degree, St. Stanislav of the fifth degree, St. Anne of the second degree, the French Legion of Honor, and the Cross of the Czechoslovak Officer of the Revolution. Also one of the interesting facts that show how great this man really was is his desire to donate his entire salary to a local children's home in order to help the orphaned children of Herceg-Novi, regardless of their nationality or ethnicity. This museum contains a historical, archaeological, ethnographic and artistic collection of icons.
