History

Illyrian and Greek Origins (5th Century BC)

The wider area of Ulcinj has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, as evidenced by Illyrian tombs (tumuli) found in the village of Zogaj nearby. The hilltop settlement was first fortified by Illyrian tribes in the 5th century BC using local stone, and those ancient defensive walls still mark the oldest layers of the fortress visible today.
