Andrijevica: Montenegro’s Hidden Mountain Gateway
Overview
Nestled in the northeastern corner of Montenegro, Andrijevica is a small mountain town that serves as the gateway to some of the country’s most spectacular alpine landscapes. Located at the confluence of the Zlorečica and Lim Rivers at an elevation of 740 meters (2,427 feet), this quiet settlement of approximately 1,073 inhabitants is surrounded by the dramatic mountain massifs of Komovi, Bjelasica, and Prokletije [1][2][3].
Andrijevica Municipality, covering an area of 340 km², is one of Montenegro’s smallest municipalities by population, with just 3,910 residents as of the 2023 census [4][5]. Despite its modest size, the town holds significant historical importance as the center of Vasojevići clan territory and boasts enormous tourism potential thanks to its pristine natural surroundings and central location among Montenegro’s premier mountain destinations.
History and Heritage
Origins and the Vasojevići Clan
The town is named after Andrija, a descendant of the prestigious Nemanjić dynasty. In the nineteenth century, the warrior tribe of Vasojevići, which was frequently rebelling against Ottoman rule, began forming a settlement around the new church of Andrijevina, which would eventually become Andrijevica [6][7].
The Vasojevići is the largest of the historical highland tribes (pleme) of Montenegro, occupying the area between Lijeva Rijeka in the south up to Bihor under Bijelo Polje in the north, Mateševo in the west to Plav in the east. Although the unofficial center is Andrijevica in northeastern Montenegro, the tribe stems from Lijeva Rijeka in central Montenegro [8][9].
Path to Independence
In 1858, Vasojević Duke Miljan Vukov proclaimed the Vasojevići region a part of Montenegro, marking a significant step in the region’s liberation from Ottoman control [10]. From that point, the settlement gradually expanded into a town, though World War I interrupted its development. Andrijevica served as the center of the county (Okrug) from 1918 to 1921 [11].
The Montenegrin Wars of Independence in the 19th century, wherein Montenegro sought to assert its autonomy from the Ottoman Empire, culminated in the Treaty of Berlin in 1878, which recognized Montenegro as an independent state [12][13]. The wars were ignited by the ambitions of Montenegro’s leaders, particularly Prince Danilo I, who aimed to expand territory and strengthen ties with other Slavic groups in the region, with key battles such as the significant victory at the Battle of Grahovo in 1858 [14].
Top Attractions
Komovi Mountain Massif
The crown jewel of Andrijevica’s natural attractions is the magnificent Komovi mountain range, one of the three most impressive mountain ranges in Montenegro and the Dinaric Alps. The Komovi massif can be accessed by car in less than 45 minutes via a scenic mountain asphalt serpentine road [15][16].
The Three Peaks:
The highest peaks of Komovi are: - Kučki Kom (2,487m) - The highest peak and Montenegro’s third-highest mountain [17][18] - Ljevorijecki Kom (2,469m) - The north peak of Kucki Kom [19] - Vasojevićki Kom (2,460m) - Named after the Vasojevići clan [20][21]
All three peaks bear the names of the clans that historically inhabited the region: Vasojevicki, Kucki, and Ljevorijecki [22]. Between these three peaks lies a distinct glacial cirque called Međukomlje, a spectacular remnant of the Ice Age [23][24].
Knjaževac Memorial Park
The Knjaževac Memorial Park is a deeply significant WWII spomenik (monument) park in the heart of Andrijevica that honors the area’s fighters and civilians who died in various conflicts [25][26]. Built in memory of the 666 killed fighters from the Municipality of Andrijevica and numerous victims of fascist terror during World War II, the park contains monuments to fighters and casualties in the Balkan Wars, World War I, World War II, and those killed in the conflicts of the 1990s [27][28].
The park is dominated by a monument of white marble with six columns that, with the eternal flame at its center, symbolize the six republics of the former Yugoslav state [29]. At the south end of the memorial park stands the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, built in 1887 by Montenegro’s ruler Prince Nikola. The park takes its name from the Prince, as ‘Knjaževac’ literally means ‘Prince’s place’ [30].
Large remembrance events and activities are held at Knjaževac memorial park every year on July 13th, marking Montenegro’s Uprising Day (Statehood Day) [31].
Trešnjevik Pass
Prevoj Trešnjevik is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 1,568 meters (5,144 feet) above sea level, located on the boundary between Andrijevica and Kolašin municipalities [32][33]. The pass offers breathtaking panoramic views and represents one of the most spectacular mountain roads in Montenegro, making it a favorite among road trip enthusiasts and photographers [34][35].
Traditional Stone Architecture and Katuns
The Andrijevica region is dotted with traditional katuns - summer mountain settlements that have, for centuries, been temporary homes to stockbreeders and shepherds [36][37]. The Komovi Nature Park encompasses the main massif, as well as the surrounding landscapes of lush mountains and remote summer katuns [38].
Traditionally, the Komovi massif was the location of katuns used by the Montenegrin tribes of Vasojevići and Kuči. These stone structures were built using materials available on site, making them appear as a natural continuation of the landscape [39][40].
Katun huts are usually small, with one room and a small partitioned space that serves as a kitchen. Thresholds on doors are always high to prevent animals from entering, while doorframes are very low, requiring visitors to duck carefully when entering [41]. Next to the huts are numerous auxiliary buildings dedicated to cattle - pens, stables, pigsties, and miniature shepherds’ sleeping huts, almost always near a water spring with large wooden troughs for animals [42].
Nature and Outdoor Activities
Hiking and Mountaineering
Kučki Kom Climb:
Kučki Kom (2,487m) is the highest peak of the Komovi range and offers an challenging but rewarding climb. The route starts from Eko Katun on the Stavna vast plateau, which offers accommodation [43][44]. There is a €2 entrance fee per person per day payable in cash at the control point when entering the nature park [45].
The hike to Kučki Kom requires a total elevation gain of 1,000 meters and takes approximately 8 hours to complete, covering roughly 14 kilometers [46][47]. After descending into forest, the path leads below the southeast side of Kom Ljevorijecki (2,469m) and goes over the beautiful Međukomlje Pass (2,171m) [48].
The last part of the climb is technically more demanding and includes obstacles such as a rock with a height of about 2 meters with a 70-degree incline at its base, and another rock wall with an 80-degree incline and small overhanging sections. There are no chains or cables to assist climbers [49][50].
From the summit, hikers are rewarded with spectacular views of Stari Vrh (2,483m), Kom Ljevorijecki (2,469m), Kom Vasojevićki (2,460m), and the giant Prokletije massif with its highest peak Maja Jezerce (2,694m) [51].
Vasojevićki Kom:
The hike to Vasojevićki Kom is approximately 10 kilometers, takes up to 6 hours, and has a total elevation gain of 750 meters, making it slightly less demanding than Kučki Kom [52].
Circular Trail:
There are many hiking trails in the immediate vicinity of the Komovi mountains. The circular route typically starts from Stavna (1,720m), although it is possible to start from one of the katuns of Popovići (Carine, 1,870m), Pričelje, or Ljuban in any direction [53][54].
Best Time for Hiking:
The ideal months for visiting the Komovi Mountains are late spring through early autumn, specifically May to September. During this period, temperatures are mild, and the weather is generally stable, with minimal rainfall [55].
Bukumirsko Lake
Bukumirsko Lake is a stunning glacial lake located at 1,443 meters elevation in the Kuči area, in the mountainous southern fringe of Komovi Nature Park [56][57]. The lake covers an area of 19,320 square meters, is 210 meters long, 130 meters wide, and up to 16.8 meters deep, with a shoreline of 585 meters [58].
The tectonically predisposed valley was transformed into a glacial valley during the Pleistocene (Ice Age), with a glacier that moved from the direction of Bigez, Pasjak, and surrounding peaks descended towards the river Mala rijeka [59]. The lake is fed by rainfall and snowmelt, with minor water level fluctuations of ±1 meter [60].
The lake is encircled by bare, craggy peaks that plunge into rolling, forested hills, creating a dramatic setting popular with hikers and campers [61]. The lake is home to the Montenegrin newt, locally known as “žmigavac,” a species endemic to the region [62].
Rivers: Zlorečica and Lim
Zlorečica River:
Andrijevica is situated at the confluence of the Zlorečica and Lim Rivers [63][64]. The Zlorečica river is formed by the Perućica and Kučkaja rivers, which meet in the village of Đulići to create a clear and cold river [65]. Kučkaja begins beneath the Komovi mountains and together with Perućica creates the Zlorečica [66].
According to local legend, the river was originally called “Dobra Rijeka” (Good River), but was renamed Zlorečica after a tragic love story involving a girl fairy that brought death to a young man [67].
In the River Kučkaja there is trout, and in the River Zlorečica trout and grayling. The complete flow of these two rivers forms part of a fly-fishing zone that continues through the river Lim for 5 kilometers downstream from the confluence of Zlorečica [68][69].
Lim River:
The Lim River flows through Montenegro, Albania, Serbia, Republic of Srpska, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, passing through towns including Andrijevica, Berane, and Bjelo Polje [70]. Andrijevica is placed on a terrace 40 meters above the river Lim [71].
Fly Fishing
The Lim River and its tributaries are included in the fly fishing zone in Andrijevica. The largest part of Lim and its tributaries belonging to this municipality are only intended for fly fishing and by catch-and-release system [72][73]. The main target species that inhabit the Lim River are Grayling (Thymallus thymallus), Brown trout (Salmo trutta), Huchen (Hucho hucho), and Chub (Squalius cephalus) [74].
Rafting
One of the most challenging 25-kilometer rafting sections in Montenegro is from the Lim River source to Andrijevica, featuring spectacular 50-meter-high rock formations above narrow creeks and cascades [75][76]. The Lim regatta is a rafting event that is traditionally held every year on the last weekend in May [77].
Winter Sports and Camping
In winter, the area offers mountain skiing and snowboarding activities on the Komovi mountain range, while in summer, the town and surroundings are excellent for walking, hiking, trekking, and rafting on the Lim river [78][79].
Village household “Kraljska Koliba” is located in the village of Kralje, three kilometers from Andrijevica, and offers camping and alpine equipment rental. It takes only a half-hour ride to reach the Regional Nature Park “Komovi” or the National Parks Bjelasica or Prokletije [80][81].
For those venturing into Prokletije National Park, optimal places for camping are “Branko Kotlajić” Hut and “Karanfili” Hut, both located in Grbaja Valley. Camping is allowed for €3 per person at the entrance of the National Park [82][83].
Access to Prokletije National Park
From Andrijevica, it takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours by car via Berane to reach Prokletije National Park [84]. Andrijevica is surrounded by the mountains Komovi, Bjelasica, and Prokletije, providing easy access to these attractive natural beauties [85][86].

Traditional Dishes to Try:
- Ispod sača: Lamb or veal cooked slowly under a metal or clay bell-shaped lid, roasted with vegetables under a sač for 5-6 hours on low heat over hot coals [104][105]
- Lamb cooked in milk: A national dish of the Albanians of Montenegro [106]
- Traditional soups: Lamb soup, veal soup, mushroom soup, or soup with cheese [107]
- Homemade cheese: From hard rind cheeses to cream cheeses, the mountain regions produce exceptional dairy products [108]
- Kačamak and Cicvara: Traditional cornmeal-based dishes [109]
Since Andrijevica is known as a region full of livestock, the local community aims to combine rural tourism with mountain tourism, offering visitors authentic farm-to-table experiences [110].
Climate and Best Time to Visit
Andrijevica is located in the mountainous interior of Montenegro and experiences a sub-alpine climate with warm summers and cold winters. During winter, temperatures can drop to as low as -15°C or -20°C degrees, with heavy snowfall [111][112].

The optimal time to visit Andrijevica and the surrounding mountains is from late April to early October, with May to September offering the warmest and most pleasant conditions for outdoor activities [113][114]. During this period, temperatures are mild, the weather is generally stable, and all hiking trails and mountain roads are accessible [115].

Why Visit Andrijevica?
Today Andrijevica is a quiet town that attracts tourists because of its picturesque landscapes and rich nature [116]. The municipality has huge tourism potential because of stunning intact nature that surrounds it and its central location among three major mountain ranges [117][118].
Activities available include mountaineering (alpinism, hiking), biking, rafting, fishing, winter sports, and cultural exploration [119][120]. The region’s combination of dramatic mountain scenery, pristine rivers and lakes, traditional architecture, and authentic mountain hospitality makes it an ideal destination for travelers seeking to experience Montenegro’s wild beauty away from the coastal crowds.
Whether you’re an experienced mountaineer aiming to summit the peaks of Komovi, a fly fisherman seeking pristine waters, a history enthusiast interested in the Vasojevići clan heritage, or simply a nature lover looking for unspoiled alpine landscapes, Andrijevica offers a genuine Montenegro mountain experience that few other destinations can match.
