Fortresses, small squares, ancient churches, narrow streets, exotic vegetation are the characteristics of the city of Herceg-Novi. Located at the very entrance to one of the most beautiful bays in the world, Boka Kotorska, it abounds in artistic and historical heritage, unique and diverse plant vegetation, natural picnic spots suitable for visiting throughout the year due to the extremely mild and warm climate. The average annual air temperature in Herceg-Novi is 16 degrees.

Whether you come from the east or the west, descending from the main road into the very center of the city, you will be greeted by the Kanli Kula fortress in its magnificent form. Due to the exceptional size and position of this tower, many say that it dominates the city. It dates from the 16th century and, like most fortresses in Herceg Novi, it is built of stone, and is characterized by ramparts and towers. What Kanli Kula is famous for throughout the Adriatic is that this fortress was adapted in 1966 and turned into a fantastic summer stage. Every summer, a large number of concerts, music, film events and the like are held in the evenings at Kanli Kula. During the day, guests can tour the walls and enjoy a wonderful view of the city panorama for only €1, which is the entrance fee. This is the place where you will take the most beautiful photos of the city and the entrance to Boka Kotorska. Descending the stairs from Kanli Kula towards the main city square - Nikola Đurkovića Square (formerly Salt Square), our view stops at Sahat or Sat Tower.

The old clock on the tower has stood the test of time for a long time, namely it was only replaced by a new electric one in 1995, and it has always been one of the main symbols of the city of Herceg Novi. Built in 1667 during the Turkish rule, the position of this tower through which the stairs pass is specific and since its construction this interesting building has been the main gate of the city. There are numerous cafes, banks, boutiques and bookstores on the square. And in the immediate vicinity is the city market, where you can buy fresh mostly local fruits and vegetables every day, but also freshly caught fish from local fishermen.

As soon as you pass the clock tower from the main square of Nikola Đurković, you will find another square in the Old Town, Belavista Square, which means "beautiful view". Belavista Square is dominated by the Orthodox Church of St. Archangel Michael, unique in its stone iconostasis. Starogradski trg is an architectural medallion. The fountain in the central part of Belavista Square was recently reconstructed and is a real tourist attraction. You can go down to the main city promenade or the beach by using one of the many narrow passages and stairs. One of the most impressive is the passage from Bellavista Square through the street Marko Cara, the writer, next to the Music School and the Catholic Church of St. Jerome (with a rich treasury) and St. Leopold Mandić. In this street, a kind of dinosaur tree, Ginko biloba, found a place next to numerous palm trees and coastal vegetation.  

This passage will also take you to the Forte Mare fortress from the 15th century, through the symbolic bridge that connects the fortress to the Old Town. Built on a rock, it rises above the coast itself, vertically above the City Beach and the harbor (Škvera). On the lower side of Forte Mare, there is a door that leads from the promenade to the top of the fortress, and it was made in the walls of the fortress, while the upper door of the fortress is also called the "Sea Gate" (Porta di mare), and it has preserved its authenticity even today. The Forte mare fortress is visible from all positions and, as its name suggests, it represents a real fortress from the sea. From July 1st, cinema screenings are held here and it mainly serves as an outdoor cinema stage, under the starry sky, which represents a unique atmosphere. You can visit it during the day every day from 07:00 to 19:00. The ticket for individual visits costs €2 and for group visits €1 per person.

When we go down to Pet Danica promenade, and look towards the eastern side of the city, we can see the Citadel fortress. Positioned right in the sea and connected to the city center by walls, this tower was built during the Venetian rule. The earthquake that hit Herceg Novi in ​​1979 completely collapsed this fortress, whose old walls are still in the sea. If you still decide to go to the opposite side, towards the city harbor and the open water polo pool, on the right you will see the Railway Station building, which is now a beautifully renovated tourist facility. Certainly, this was a unique railway station considering that it was built on the very coast of the sea next to the city port. It is little known that the Pet Danica promenade used to carry railway traffic in Boka, and that the main station was in Zelenica. The railway was officially opened on July 16, 1901, when the first train with high-ranking officials of Austria-Hungary, which ruled Boka Kotorska at the time, arrived in Zelenica. The railway station building in Herceg Novi was built in 1934 thanks to the reputation of the mayor Mirko Komnenović. It was built in stone, and was reconstructed and reopened in 2005.

From the terrace of "Stanice" there is a view of a small marina and a lighthouse where fishing boats, tourist boats and yachts are moored. Škver, as it is popularly called, is the main place where you can rent a boat or board one of the small boats that take you on excursions to nearby places in Herceg Novi, which can be reached most quickly by sea. In the summer months when the city is very crowded, Rose, Mamula and Žanjice are unmissable destinations due to their natural beauty, historical significance and relaxing atmosphere. In addition to the preserved beautiful Mediterranean town of Rose, it is also one of the oldest settlements in our region. In many historical writings, it is mentioned as the settlement of Resnium as early as the fourth century. In the area of ​​Ross, both on land and in the sea, there are very important archaeological sites. A large number of divers come to these areas to engage in underwater archeological research and to view old shipwrecks from long ago that are lying on the bottom, and there is also a very famous diving camp on Rosa. Along the waterfront where there are several restaurants, there is also the old fortress Forte Rose, which includes a restaurant and a tourist complex. The island with Mamula fortress is located on the sea road towards Žanjice. Although the history of Mamula Fort is dark, its appearance is stunning. It is located on the small rocky island of Lastavici, at the very entrance to the Bay of Kotor. It represents one of a series of significant fortifications (together with Arza and Prevlaka) that the Austro-Hungarian army built in 1853 to defend the entrance to the bay. Its name is also symbolic, it comes from the name of the Austrian general Lazar Mamula, whose idea was to build a fortress on the island.  Due to its exceptional architectural design, this fortress is considered one of the most beautiful on the Adriatic. The entrance to the fortress is on the north-eastern side of the island, where there is also a drawbridge.  Although inaccessible, it is a must-see place both for a tour and for swimming during the summer months. If we continue towards the open sea, we will reach the Žanjic beach, one of the most popular beaches in Montenegro. This beach is special because of the crystal clear sea, the natural white pebble beach and the old olive groves that are located above the beach itself. You can take a look at the church of St. Jovana, which dates from 1881 and is located in olive groves just a few steps from the beach and hear an interesting story about this church and the idyllic place of Žanjice, or take a walk through the beautiful nature to the nearby Mirišta beach.
